INTENT

The need for increased communication and literacy skills cannot be understated. Our aim is to create a learning environment which will allow students to develop their curiosity and problem-solving skills whilst becoming aware of different identities and cultures. Above all, we intend to provide students with the tools to communicate effectively in a foreign language, thus expanding personal horizons and creating opportunities.

Our main aim is to open our students’ horizons by encouraging them to learn and manipulate concepts in a different language and raise awareness of the challenges they will face in an increasing globalised world. We want to provide them with the necessary tools to become independent language learners in the future.

INTENT

IMPLEMENTATION OF EDUCATION IN LANGUAGES

Our Pearson Edexcel French and Spanish courses allow students to develop their ability to communicate with French or Spanish native speakers in both speech and writing. They will study across a variety of contexts relevant to their age and interests and will also develop a greater awareness of culture of French or Spanish-speaking communities and countries. Students will need to develop and use their knowledge and understanding of grammar progressively through their course of study.

Questions across all four language skills are set in common contexts, addressing a range of relevant contemporary and cultural themes. They are organised into five themes, each broken down into topics and sub-topics.

The five themes are:

  • Identity and culture
  • Local area, holiday and travel
  • School
  • Future aspirations, study and work
  • International and global dimension.

All themes and topics must be studied in the context of both the students’ home country and that of countries and communities where French and Spanish are spoken.

KS3

Students in the upper band will have the opportunity to learn a modern foreign language. Students in the lower band are expected to work on their literacy skills.

KS4

Students have the option to choose a language at KS4, which will be either French or Spanish. Students who are fluent in other European languages are also given the opportunity to sit GCSEs in their home language. At the moment, we offer additional GCSEs in Portuguese, Polish and Russian.

IMPACT

Summative assessments are sat three times a year in all year groups. In key stage 3 for year 7 and 8 assessments from Pearson Edexcel are used. In years 9, 10 and 11 GCSE papers or questions are used in addition to the Pearson Edexcel tests to allow students to become familiar with the format of the questions they will be required to answer. We use low stake testing (e.g. knowledge organiser tests and tasks drawn from the Pearson Edexcel workbook) to apply a principle of continuity and rigour in order to track progress and plan intervention to address gaps in students’ knowledge.
