Curriculum Intent

At Haven High, our curriculum is carefully designed to foster holistic development, equipping students with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary for success in the dynamic and interconnected world of the 21st century. Our intent is to provide a rich and purposeful educational experience that goes beyond academic achievement, nurturing well-rounded individuals who are critical thinkers, compassionate citizens, and lifelong learners.

1. Academic Excellence: Our curriculum is built on a foundation of academic excellence, aiming to instill a deep and lasting passion for learning in our students. Through a rigorous and well-sequenced academic and vocational program, we strive to develop strong foundations in core subjects while promoting intellectual curiosity and creativity across the curriculum and beyond. We believe in empowering students to explore their interests and unlock their full potential.

2. Personal and Social Development: Beyond academics, our curriculum places a strong emphasis on personal and social development. We are committed to cultivating essential life skills, such as communication, collaboration, and problem-solving. Our students will engage in activities that promote resilience, self-awareness, and a sense of responsibility, preparing them to navigate the complexities of adulthood with confidence and empathy.

3. Global Citizenship: In an increasingly interconnected world, we aim to cultivate global citizens who appreciate diversity, understand different cultures, and contribute positively to society. Our curriculum incorporates opportunities for international perspectives, fostering a sense of global awareness and encouraging students to become active and responsible participants in a rapidly changing global community.

4. Enrichment and Extra-Curricular Opportunities: We recognize the importance of a well-rounded education that extends beyond the classroom. Our curriculum includes a diverse range of enrichment and extra-curricular activities, from sports and arts to community service and leadership programs. These experiences provide students with opportunities to develop character, teamwork, and a strong sense of civic responsibility.

5. Innovation and Technology: To prepare students for the challenges of the future, our curriculum integrates cutting-edge technology and promotes innovation. We aim to develop digital literacy and critical thinking skills, empowering students to adapt to technological advancements and contribute meaningfully to the evolving landscape of the digital age.

6. Wellbeing and Mental Health: The wellbeing of our students is at the core of our curriculum. We prioritize mental health and emotional resilience, providing a supportive environment that fosters positive mental health practices. Our curriculum includes strategies for stress management, mindfulness, and emotional intelligence, ensuring that students are equipped to face the demands of academic and personal challenges with resilience.

In essence, the Haven High Academy curriculum is designed to inspire, challenge, and empower students to become lifelong learners, compassionate leaders, and responsible global citizens. By fostering a love for learning, promoting personal growth, and embracing diversity, we aim to shape individuals who are prepared to thrive in an ever-changing world and make meaningful contributions to society

Reading

We recognise that the academic success of our students is dependent on them being fluent and proficient readers. To encourage all students to read widely, once a week all members of the Academy partake in our Drop Everything And Read (DEAR) initiative, allowing students to engage in their own reading whilst demonstrating reading as a lifelong occupation of the teachers. Our World Book Day celebrations create an immersive reading experience involving local bookshops and Boston library, and our students are issued a Rooted in Reading passport to track their personal reading and encourage them to extend the range of texts they encounter. We recognise that reading for pleasure is one of the greatest determining factors of academic success and therefore encourage students to read for 20 minutes per night.

Assessment

Common assessments in most subjects are taken by students year on year ensure a consistent approach. These are high quality summative assessments which allow students to demonstrate their growing understanding of their subjects and teachers to assess the impact of their teaching. These summative assessments are typically taken two or three times a year.

Our formative assessments are designed to support students in achieving fluency in each subject. This means that in lessons students are quizzed on prior knowledge in order to embed this knowledge in their long-term memory. This frees up their working memory to attend to current learning. Knowledge organisers provide students with key information in each subject, enabling them to develop their understanding of key concepts outside of their lessons.
