Science Curriculum Statement

Haven High Academy science faculty aims to develop the scientific knowledge of students and to give them the confidence to apply their scientific abilities and skills. We aim to develop the students’ metacognitive skills to elevate their approach towards problem-solving, to develop social and communication skills through inquiry and debate, and to develop an awareness of the contribution science makes to the personal development of the individual, the local community, and the world in which we live.

IMPLEMENTATION OF LEARNING IN SCIENCE

As a faculty, we will provide a science curriculum that delivers the National Curriculum from year 7 to 11 giving students the skills they will need in everyday life. By choosing learning experiences that build upon and extend previous work and prior knowledge, we aim to encourage students to take on responsibility for their own learning by facilitating the development of research, practical and investigative skills. We will provide opportunities for students to participate in cross curricular activities to develop their understanding of how different subjects interact with each other, examples of this include STEM clubs, enrichment events, cross curricular planning and extended projects.

To foster a greater understanding of the curriculum we aim to promote literacy and the attainment of a broad vocabulary for all, with the addition of subject specific language to develop a sophistication to the students writing. We encourage students to work independently and in groups, applying their knowledge, skills and understanding in a range of situations and contexts, preparing them for their journey into life after graduation. We aim to prepare our students for the challenges of GCSE examinations by developing an ethos and drive from year 7 through to year 11 for knowledge acquisition, and ensuring through curriculum design that not only do the students receive a broad foundation of science understanding, but they are well equipped with skills and knowledge needed to succeed in examinations at GCSE level and beyond. The science curriculum is designed to accommodate all abilities of students and learning styles, incorporating retrieval and revisiting of topics to add layers of depth and complexity where necessary, with continuous reflection and review of the curriculum ensuring it remains robust and relevant.

Haven High’s core values of PRIDE (Progress, Resilience, Integrity, Disciplined, Excellence) are built into every aspect of the curriculum, from lesson planning to enrichment events. The focus from year 7 is to build up layers of knowledge, skill, confidence, self-belief and resilience that progress from year to year. For home learning, students will utilise a knowledge organiser containing key information that will be vital in the development of their subject knowledge. Students are encouraged to follow a disciplined schedule in order to learn the key information and are subsequently tested in class. They are also given other homework activities such as exam questions or activities that embed and apply gained knowledge, to develop their independent learning skills, continually striving for excellent.

In science, the faculty addresses curricular requirements for Years 7 – 11 including the core elements of Biology (Organisms, Ecosystems and Genes), Chemistry (Matter, Reactions and The Earth) and Physics (Forces, Energy and Waves). Our year 7 and 8 students focus on key scientific elements ensuring the students have a solid grasp of the fundamentals of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. These elements include scientific inquiry that builds in maths skills to help problem solving and data analysis, literacy skills to enable communication of ideas and planning and working scientifically to enable the ability to conduct fair and scientific investigations.

IMPACT

It is the aim of the science faculty to have high expectations for all students and to provide support, stretch and challenge with enrichment in learning using knowledge of starting points and prior learning to drive the progression required to reach the end goal.

This is achieved through the use of a range of assessment and analysis strategies: timely testing, moderation of assessments and data tracking systems.

Summative assessments are completed three times a year in all year groups. In years 7 and 8 assessment material from Kerboodle and AQA are used. In years 9 to 11 GCSE papers or questions are used to allow students to become familiar with the format of the questions, along-side assessment material from Kerboodle to help build an understanding of different contexts the knowledge can be applied to.

In addition, all year groups take part in low stake testing and formative assessments such as quizzes, use of differentiated workbooks, 6-mark questions and practical/data questions during lessons, to gauge students understanding on not only current topics but the recall for other subject areas.

Detailed analysis of internal testing including question level analysis provides the faculty with an accurate overview of pupil progress in order that gaps in learning can be closed through classroom and targeted intervention.

Biology is the science of living organisms and their interactions with each other and the environment and the study of biology is fundamental to our understanding of life and the world in which we live.

All students need to recognize the importance of and be knowledgeable about many key biological ideas that will have an application throughout their lives.

Through observing and collecting information, interpreting and identifying patterns students can understand cause and effect, which will help to improve their own lives and world around them.

A broad and balanced understanding of biology will develop informed, inquisitive and healthy citizens to develop and preserve our world.

CHEMISTRY

Education should be available to all regardless of background and circumstances. Young people should expect to receive a quality education full of powerful knowledge, life-long skills and enrichment to develop a contributory citizen of the world.

Chemistry is the science of the composition, structure, properties and reactions of matter and the study of chemistry is fundamental to our understanding of life, the world in which we live  and the materials which we use.

All students need to recognize the achievements of and be knowledgeable about key chemical processes, both in nature and the man-made world, that will impact them throughout their lives.

Through understanding synthesis and formulation, completing analysis and identifying properties and trends, students will able to improve their own lives and world around them.

A broad and balanced understanding of chemistry will develop informed, inquisitive and healthy citizens to develop and preserve our world.

PHYSICS

Education should be available to all regardless of background and circumstances. Young people should expect to receive a quality education full of powerful knowledge, life-long skills and enrichment to develop a contributory citizen of the world.

Physics is the science that seeks to explain the universe itself from the very smallest of particles to the vast distances between galaxies, allowing a scientific understanding of how and why things happen.

Students make observations in physics, make models to help understand these observations and develop their own theories, using their imagination at times to process hard to visualise concepts. They will recognise through various context and historical developments that physics is a science that is dynamic and continually developing new theories and technologies.

Physics impacts on every aspect of our lives from the electricity we rely on to the vehicles we use and the medical treatments we receive, the modern world of communications is embedded on a knowledge of physics and future developments in technologies will impact students in throughout their lives.
