Haven High Science Curriculum Statement

 

At our school, we use the White Rose Science curriculum to inspire curiosity and develop a love of learning. Through practical investigations and hands-on experiences, pupils build scientific knowledge, ask questions, think critically and explore the world around them. Learning is carefully sequenced to ensure knowledge and skills progress across biology, chemistry and physics, helping every child become a confident and inquisitive scientist.

 

Implementation of Learning in Science at Haven High

 

Science is taught from Years 7 to 11 through a carefully sequenced curriculum that develops scientific knowledge, practical skills and scientific thinking. At Key Stage 3, students follow the White Rose Science curriculum, which builds understanding progressively across biology, chemistry and physics through practical investigation, enquiry and collaborative learning.

 

Scientific vocabulary is explicitly taught and revisited to support literacy development and ensure students can communicate scientific ideas confidently and accurately. Practical work is embedded throughout the curriculum, enabling students to apply their knowledge, analyse evidence and develop their investigative skills.

 

Cross-curricular links are actively promoted, allowing students to apply mathematical skills when analysing data and graphs, develop literacy through scientific writing and evaluation, and explore links with subjects such as Geography, Design Technology, Computing and PE. These connections help students understand the relevance of science in the wider world and across a range of careers.

 

At Key Stage 4, students study the White Rose Science curriculum for the AQA Combined Science GCSE course, Students are taught by subject specialists for each of the separate sciences, with opportunities to follow separate GCSE qualifications in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Teaching is designed to prepare students for examination success while fostering curiosity, resilience and a deeper understanding of how science impacts society, technology and the environment. Practical investigations remain a key component of learning, ensuring students develop the skills and knowledge required for further study and future employment

The impact of our Science curriculum is measured through a robust assessment framework that enables students to demonstrate, apply and build upon their knowledge over time. Students complete regular formative assessments within lessons, end of block assessments following each unit of study and annual examinations to assess knowledge retention, scientific understanding and progress across biology, chemistry and physics. Assessment outcomes are used to identify strengths, address misconceptions and inform future teaching.

 

Students achieve positive outcomes in science and are well prepared for further education, apprenticeships and careers within STEM fields.
