The Mathematics faculty at Haven High aims to make all students fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics. This is done through varied and frequent practice over time, so that students develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall knowledge rapidly and accurately. Mathematics is essential to everyday life, and is the building blocks for all technology based subjects as well as the sciences. The skills and knowledge gained in mathematics will be vital to our students in their adult life and needed so they can be confident when dealing with personal finance, as well assisting them with numerous employment opportunities.

As a faculty, we want to develop a positive attitude towards maths and its applications. We aim to provide students with the knowledge of how to use and apply maths, and its potential to enrich wider aspects of their education. We aim to prepare students for the rigours of GCSE by working closely with our feeder schools and using GCSE style questions in our lessons and assessments; Year 9 are still following the KS3 curriculum with some additional focus on GCSE style questions to ensure a smooth transition to their GCSE studies in year 10 and 11. For home learning, all students are given a knowledge organiser full of key information that will be vital in the development of their knowledge. Students are asked to learn what is on them and are regularly tested in class using low stakes quizzes. They are also given other tasks eg exam questions to complete or key facts to learn.



In KS3 Maths, the faculty addresses curricular requirements for Years 7, 8 and 9 – including the four core elements of Arithmetic education: Algebra, Numbers, Handling Data, and Shape and Space.

Our year 7 and 8 pupils are on a mastery curriculum, where we teach fewer concepts but in greater depth, allowing pupils to have stronger foundations. Mastery focuses on three elements: first, the principal of fluency, ensuring students have grasp of the fundamentals. Secondly is reasoning, the ability for students to be able to talk what they are doing and why. Thirdly problem solving, once students are fluent and can apply reasoning these can be then used to address and solve problems.

We use differentiated MyMaths textbooks for year 7 as problem solving features heavily. For year 8 we use the latest Maths Frameworking text book from Collins (in line with the National Curriculum).


In Key Stage 4, students are taught GCSE Maths. The exam board for GCSE Maths is OCR and Statistics is Edexcel. There are two Tiers of entry: Higher and Foundation. The results in Year 9 will determine which Tier students will study at in year 10.

Summative assessments are sat three times a year in all year groups. In key stage 3 for year 7 and 8 ‘GL Assessments’ tests are used. In years 9 10 and 11 GCSE papers or questions are used to allow students to become familiar with the format of the questions they will be required to answer. In addition, throughout all year groups low stake testing and formative assessments is prevalent through all lessons. This is done to gauge students understanding on not only current topics but the recall for other subject areas.
